Welcome to Soaring Eagle Ecology Center’s 2012 FREE summer environmental education programs. Soaring Eagle Ecology Center (SEEC) is pleased to offer free classes this summer for learners of all ages. MAY 2012: 

May 9, 2012, Wednesday, 1:30 pm 
Title: WILDLIFE FRIENDLY LIGHTING
Presenter: Teresa Jiles, Research Associate II for the National Parks Service, a leading researcher on Natural Lightscapes.
Audience: Special presentation for Mountain Gals
Location: Red Feather POA (across from RFL Library)

May 29 – 31, June 1, 2012, Tuesday – Friday Special environmental education programs for Polaris Expeditionary Learning School

JUNE 2012:
June 5, 2012: Tuesday, 4 pm – sunset  TRANSIT of VENUS!!!

DO NOT MISS THIS EVENT!!!

Take the afternoon off work, bring the family and neighbors - it's worth it!
Title: TRANSIT of VENUS - Join CSU LSOP, CSU CIRA, NCAS and SEEC in family weather science and solar astronomy fun in the sun! The transit of Venus is a once in a lifetime event - this will not occur again for 117 years! It can best be viewed through a solar telescope. Join us with NCAS astronomers and their various types of solar telescopes to see Venus racing across the surface of the Sun! The beginning of the transit starts ~4:15pm and last until the sun sets behind the mountains. Science demos and activity tables, sun bead bracelet making, cookies and lemonade are provided free without charge throughout the event to give you a chance to see Venus's progress across the Sun!

Presenters: CSU Little Shop of Physics (LSOP) volunteers, CSU Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere scientists and students (CIRA), Northern Colorado Astronomical Society (NCAS).

Audience: General Audience (adults, families, children - supervised please)
Location: Red Feather Lakes Elementary School and SEEC land
Registration: First come, first serve – no reservations needed.
Look at the Sun anytime safely with your own solar viewer. Purchase a solar viewer for $3 or 2 for $5, proceeds go to SEEC for future programs (no credit cards please).

June 15, 2012: Friday, 2 – 3 pm
Title: CoCoRaHS – Learn about this fabulous volunteer program started in Colorado and now in all 50 states & Canada.

Presenter: Noah Newman, Research Associate, Colorado Climate Center, CSU, educator with CoCoRaHS Audience: General Audience (adults, families and children)

June 16, 2012: Saturday, 2:30 – 4 pm

Title: THE BOOTS OF FORT LARAMIE, including information on 2010 excavations around Fort Laramie

Presenter: Cynthia (Cid) Squarcia, University of Wyoming archaeology graduate student

Audience: General Audience

June 25, 2012: Monday, 10 am –  Noon

Title: GPS GEOCACHING - Explore this fun outdoor sporting activity. Geocache sites will be different from last year.

Presenters: Rosemary Davenport and Alice Schiel, former teachers, avid hikers.and outdoor enthusiasts

Audience: Student program - elementary and middle school (entering grades 2 through grade 9). Parents are welcome to join the fun. Age groupings formed as needed.

Location: Red Feather Lakes Elementary School and SEEC land. Possibility program may include additional site (check SEEC website at www.seecatrfl.org in June).

July 14, 2012: Saturday, 3:30 – 5 pm

Title: COLORADO DIAMONDS

Presenter: Dr. Pete Modreski, US Geological Survey and ardent rockhound

Audience: General Audience

July 16 – July 20, 2012: Monday – Friday, 9 – 11:30 am

Title: JR. ENVIRONMENTAL EXPLORERS WEEK There will be different exploration each morning. Check SEEC website (www.seecatrfl.org) to see more detailed information or call 970-218-9685.

Presenters: Multiple presenters, featuring Cindy Henk (microbiologist and Colorado Native Plant Society member), Noah Newman (CoCoRaHS educator), National Park Service Natural Sounds Team, Linda Hamilton (naturalist with Lory State Park), and Project Wild and Project Learning Tree educators.

Audience: Student program – elementary and middle school (entering grades 2 through grade 9). Age groupings as needed.

Title: NEW WATERSHED AND ENERGY ADVENTURES New adventures each day. Please note that Watershed and Energy Adventures will be Monday through Thursday. Friday will include a nature journal and a celebration of environmental adventures.

Presenters: Back by popular demand, the team from Fort Collins Utilities Water and Energy – Marcee Camenson, Sheena Pate and Jean Carpenter.

Audience: Student program – elementary and middle school (entering grades 2 through grade 9). Age grouping as needed.

Soaring Eagle Ecology Center (SEEC) is a all volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is committed to offering free, quality environmental programs for learners of all ages. SEEC is located on approximately 20 acres of land adjacent to Red Feather Lakes Elementary School and works in close cooperation with the school. It is SEEC’s hope that our environmental education nonprofit will add value to the Red Feather Lakes area, RFLE School, as well as Poudre School District.

SEEC has had a fantastic start to 2012. We were selected for the 2012 Larimer County Open Lands Small Grants for Community Partnerships to construct a universally-accessible, outdoor classroom. With the help of the grant award and matching funds from Red Feather Historical Society and Chapel in the Pines, SEEC’s universally-accessible classroom will be ready this June! SEEC has no paid employees, and without the support of volunteers, local organizations and donations, SEEC would not exist.
